Philippe Chancel, winner of the FIDAL PHOTO 2017 prize, exhibits his DATAZONE series at the Rencontres Internationales de la photographie d’Arles.

The artist has spent fifteen years exploring sensitive sites on our planet, to auscultate the world and observe the most alarming symptoms of its decline. Doing work in such a way does not correspond to any genre identified in photographic practices. This is why Datazone is an invention which manages to encompass the most tangible signs of the predicted catastrophe: traumatic ecology, chaotic deindustrialisation, toxic reverses of modernization. From China to the United States, via Africa and Europe, the whole world is screaming in our eyes. And no refuge is in sight. Philippe Chancel is a classic photographer, what he constructs confirms to us that the modern world has not kept its promises. It is through the assemblage of images that testify to a deep sensitivity to the world that a great story can be constructed.
